POLYCRYSTALLINE DIAMOND (PCD) DRILL BITS

Polycrystalline Diamond bits consist of a purpose designed cast matrix or machined steel body to which Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) inserts have been fixed in a precise pattern. Three different types of PCD bits are available.

Polycrystalline Diamond drill bits have proven successful in soft to medium-hard consolidated formations. They are widely used in coalfields exploration for open hole drilling to the zone of interest before core drilling commences. Methane gas drainage in coal mines is an important application for this product for Rotary and in Hole Motor Drilling.

PCD bits will tolerate small amounts of slightly harder rock but this is not recommended. They should never be used in hard or broken formations (or in areas where hard bands may be encountered.) as the PCD "buttons" while very abrasive resistant are likely to chip or crack rendering the bit unusable.

CLORE BITS, HOLE OPENERS & STABILISERS

Non-core bits used for open hole drilling. The cutting pattern is covered by PCD inserts. Standard sizes are: 55, 65, 76, 96, 99, 123 mm diameters.

Use of Stabilisers behind CLORE bits is recommended. Stabilisers reduce vibration and hole deviation when drilling.

Full round PCD inserts can be replaced or rotated when wear flats form following a long drilling programme. This increases the life of the bit substantially and reduces bit cost per metre drilled. Any other shaped insert can be replaced or "backed off" by grinding.

A repair and refurbishing service is available.
